About CIDEREU
Uniting Europe’s Apple Heritage for a Sustainable Future.
CIDEREU is more than a network; it’s a movement to revitalize rural communities through the cultural, economic, and environmental power of cider.
Our Vision and Mission
At the heart of CIDEREU lies a commitment to preserving centuries-old cider-making traditions across Europe while simultaneously driving sustainable economic and social growth in rural areas. Our mission is to transform these regions into resilient, vibrant hubs of culture and innovation. We believe that by celebrating local identity, we can create a sustainable future that honors the past.
Preserving Heritage, Preventing Depopulation
European rural areas face critical challenges: aging populations, depopulation, and the erosion of cultural identity. CIDEREU utilizes the universal appeal of apple heritage and cider culture as a strategic tool to counter these trends. By promoting sustainable cider tourism, creating local economic opportunities, and fostering cross-border knowledge exchange, we provide concrete reasons for people, especially the youth, to stay and thrive in their hometowns. We are dedicated to turning vulnerabilities into strengths.
Building on European Values
A Sustainable and Inclusive Approach
We strictly adhere to the principles of the New European Bauhaus (NEB), ensuring that all project activities are beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive (together). A core pillar of our strategy is highlighting and empowering the role of women in agriculture. Recognizing women as the often-unseen guardians of rural heritage and agents of change, we prioritize their active participation and leadership in all revitalisation efforts.
A Pan-European Collaboration
CIDEREU brings together 11 committed partners from 6 European countries, creating a dynamic platform for collaboration. From the traditional cider regions of Asturias (Spain) and Astigiano (Italy) to emerging rural innovation hubs in Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and beyond, our network shares best practices, implements pilot activities, and drafts a comprehensive European Compendium on Sustainable Rural Revitalization.
